Footpath and brick steps

Footpath and brick steps

If the house is built or revetted with red brick and issued by beautiful porch and ladder from the same material, for the general harmony by itself the path from similar material arises. Such lovely style does the territory, adjacent to the house, cozy and attractive. Besides, this option of arrangement of paths is more practical, than, we will allow the footpaths which are simply sanded and more eco-friendly, than the asphalted areas from which harmful evaporations and smell of hot bitumen rise in the summer. Laying of brick is made on sand-gravel substrate or concrete slab, the form of path can be chosen the most different: from direct and wide to twisting and narrow.

Of course, the tile laid on concrete solution behaves more steadily, but unintentional roughnesses of the brick path laid in sand are part of charm of this traditional construction material. It is impossible to call process of laying of brick on sand gravel bed very simple and easy, but if desired, the beginner can even cope with such work. Here special knowledge, skills, heavy mechanisms and expensive devices are not necessary. It is not obligatory to perform work in one day, it is not necessary to hurry, better to postpone every time process if you feel that were tired.

Material selection and tools

Material for domestic path needs to be chosen taking into account that it will be subject to all natural phenomena as the path will be located on the street. Any brick will not approach here, special sidewalk stone blocks or paving slabs is necessary. Material not from cheap, but over the years operation it will pay for itself because it is rather strong, steady against considerable temperature differences and adverse weather conditions, maintains strong heat, hard frosts to it too are not terrible. The normal corpulent brick will crack after the first winter and to turn into not palatable show. Besides it is not safe to move on such footpath since cracks quickly progress, and the brick quickly will begin to be painted.

The sidewalk brick (stone blocks) is classical material, it is used in road making for a long time and has proved as:

  • long-lasting and steady against aging;
  • not subject to deformation: the brick sizes even at intensive loading practically do not change;
  • steady against mechanical, chemical and other adverse effects;
  • eco-friendly: stone blocks has no chemical additives and is produced from natural clay of different grades;
  • convenient in laying since has the optimum sizes and weight;
  • attractive externally as has natural natural colors and shades;
  • practical material: it can be reused, dismantled and again to stack.

If your porch and the house have managed to lose a little for years of operation the initial color, costs, and to look for materials for footpath the corresponding age or color. Glance on the city portal and look at announcements in local newspapers. It is not seldom possible to meet announcements of sale of second-hand materials. It will be more favorable: first, cheaper, and secondly, color of future footpath will be in harmony more with the house and porch.

If all of you buy new material, but want to make old it, then it can be done by means of soot. For this purpose at first try to apply soot on separate brick and decide on its quantity. Soot can be rubbed by means of rigid brush or foam rubber.

By stone blocks the twisting footpath, steps and platforms which can be decorated by means of elements of excellent shades can be laid out.

The sidewalk brick is capable to create improbable harmony and to complete the general design of the yard, at the same time it is important to choose correctly brick form, color and the sizes of seam for path of certain width. Study catalogs where ready paths are shown, look at materials on the thematic websites and choose the laying option suitable for themselves.

The excellent frost resistance and low moisture absorption of sidewalk brick do possible its application even in the coldest regions and in areas with the increased humidity.

Except the brick with sizes of 45 x 200 x 100 mm it will be necessary for us:

  • wooden antiseptic boards with a section of 25 x 65 mm;
  • wooden pegs (wedges) for fixing of boards;
  • gravel or granite crumb;
  • coarse-grained bank sand;
  • fine sand.

From tools it is required:

  • rubber hammer;
  • metal hammer;
  • the tool for tamper of crushed stone and sand, it it is possible to buy in hardware store or to make most. The tool represents itself the weighty metal equal basis about 25 x 25 in size fixed on the long handle. The weight of such tool has to be about 25 kg, but it is possible to apply and easier.
  • the wooden dandy-roll for sand, it it is possible to manufacture of improvised materials. Ideally it is wooden board with a section of 15 x 4 cm, the total length of which is more than width of path. At the edges of such dandy-roll cut excesses of tree that the lower part of board precisely entered the made wooden mold.
  • mop with brush with long bristle.
  • bayonet, square-faced and cleanup shovel;
  • tanks for mixing of solution and for water;
  • axe, hacksaw.

Preparatory work

Planning arrangement of path, avoid laying it near the big or growing trees, their roots, developing, can break path brickwork.

It is desirable to make drainage groove of small depth along all path, it will prolong the term of operation of path, considerable rain flows if they flow on path, will wash away sand, will break integrity and can provoke strong soaking of material. The sidewalk brick, though moisture is steady, but it does not mean that it can remain in ice, and in the conditions of our climate quite often after season of intensive rains there come considerable frosts at once.

Having chosen arrangement of path, it is necessary to make dredging with calculation that the main part of footpath will be located level with other plottage.

Further on both parties of future path to arrange boards, fixing them by means of wooden stakes. The place of joint with lawn has to be strong, the integrity of the operated footpath will depend on it. Boards have to be located level with lawn, after about two years of board it will be possible to remove. By then the path will thoroughly settle and will be strengthened at the expense of the grass adjoining to it. Stacking boards, all the time you watch width of the space located between them, boards, in this case, play also role of guides of path.

According to construction standards for pedestrian path it is necessary to make the two-layer basis 20 – 25 cm thick on which to stack sidewalk brick 40 – 45 mm thick. In practice the basis is done by no more than 15 cm therefore after laying of guides start charge of mix of sand and gravel or sand and granite crumb. After charge the layer is humidified and rammed, the layer of coarse-grained sand is filled further. The layer of sand has to be equal to length of brick minus width plus 2 – 3 cm. Sand before fill needs to be drenched well water. Sand by the rule small sites on 10 centimeters is leveled, at the same time it is not obligatory to condense it, consolidation will be made at stage of laying of brick. Movements by the rule do to themselves and from themselves, gradually condensing and leveling sand base.

Laying of brick

After the sand base is ready start directly laying of sidewalk brick. Extreme ranks of path carry out the brick put on end face. The drawing can be chosen randomly, the brick can be laid as closely to each other, and with gap. For alignment of bricks use rubber hammer. Usually such works are performed, gradually preparing sites and filling them with brick, but the hand-pitched stone subbase can be executed on all area of arrangement of path at once. After all brick is laid, the space between elements of path is filled with fine sand, for this purpose sand is filled directly on bricks and leveled by means of mop with brush. It is recommended to humidify all surface well after that. After month it is necessary to fill up once again path with sand, place it and to humidify.

It is impossible to add to the sand intended for top layer, dry cement for the purpose of its best fixing. Such mistake leads to the fact that the salt which is contained in cement after the first rains will begin to appear on path surface, forming white spots that will spoil all esthetics of path.

On big platforms, for example, before porch, it is recommended to stack one row on cement slurry with step to 3 – 4 meters, also for the purpose of strengthening it is possible to strengthen base layer of crushed-stone preparation after tamper weak cement slurry by scattering of mix at the rate of the 2nd liter of cement slurry on 1 sq.m of hand-pitched stone subbase.

On such path you can go or ride bicycle, but it will hardly be able to sustain heavy transport so be accurate if you want to use the footpath long.

Brick steps on the course of path give all the best without the recommended sizes of height and width of steps if quantity of landscape steps no more than 5. As a rule, on their one site no more than three can be required. Any width can be chosen according to the sizes of the flowerpots installed on them or other decorative elements. Very often carry out the rounded-off steps, connecting narrow (upper) and wider part of path or in places of turns of footpath.

The laying is carried out on concrete foundation for which use cement of the brand not less M400. Preparation of the basis includes crushed-stone preparation, mounting of wood form, filling of timbering with concrete with the subsequent laying of the first step from two layers of brick. The second and the subsequent steps are carried out already on the stiffened first layer of the base. Seams on steps and on path can make from 0.5 to 1 cm. Seams on steps in the same way, as on path – fine sand with leveling method by means of brush on mop are filled. And also after filling of seams the laying needs to be spilled water.
