Gypsum cardboard: types, features

A little in whom repair causes positive emotions. And the reason of such “dislike” is caused first of all by uneven surfaces of walls, ceilings and floors which need to be put in order prior to all works. Emergence of gypsum cardboard in the construction market has given the chance to reduce stages on alignment of walls, but also has allowed to create unique interiors indoors. At the same time It should be noted simplicity of mounting of gypsum cardboard and swore at the huge choice of different types of it.

Gypsum cardboard: types and features

Gypsum cardboard sheets (HL) are familiar even to those who independently are not engaged in construction and repair, this type of finishing became so popular.

HL are applied practically in all spheres of repair construction jobs:

  • During creation of arches;
  • At alignment of walls and ceilings;
  • During creation of multilevel ceilings;
  • For forming of niches and fitted cupboards;
  • For decorative finishing;
  • At registration of facades;
  • For repair of rooms of the increased humidity.

It is unlikely today there is some type of finishing which cannot be implemented by means of sheets of gypsum cardboard. Understanding convenience of this material, producers constantly expand the range, proposing all new solutions.

The classical option of gypsum cardboard represents leaf, the made by pressing method, having plaster core and cardboard as facing layers. Classify gypsum cardboard to destination. Scope of application defines modification of material and its thickness.

The following decisions occur among types of gypsum cardboard:

  • Wall;
  • Ceiling;
  • Arch;
  • Moisture resistant;
  • Fire-resistant;
  • Front;
  • With heater;
  • With vinyl covering.

Wall gypsum cardboard has white-gray color and thickness in 12.5 mm. It is used when it is necessary to implement the design and construction ideas on repair and mounting of walls or partitions. Besides, this material is widely used during creation of niches, shelves and for registration of false ceilings.

Ceiling gypsum cardboard differs in smaller thickness – 9.5 mm that allows to facilitate the mounted design significantly. As it is clear from the name, this material is used for facing of ceiling and during creation of multilevel decisions. Also small thickness increases flexibility of gypsum cardboard that does it demanded during creation of arches and other curvilinear designs.

Arch gypsum cardboard has the minimum thickness from all similar materials – 6.5 mm. It is necessary for creation of different designs of different radius of curvature.

Moisture resistant gypsum cardboard has marking of GKLV and the external sheets painted in green color. It practically does not absorb moisture that allows to use material when finishing bathrooms, bathrooms and other rooms with the increased air humidity.

Fire-resistant or fire-resistant gypsum cardboard (GKLO) differs in surface of red color. It has the reinforced internal structure that does this material almost unreceptive to fire and the increased temperatures.

Front gypsum cardboard from two parties is covered with fiber glass. Has standard thickness in 12.5 mm and bright yellow coloring of surface.

Gypsum cardboard with heater is modification of material when by glue method attach the polystyrene foam block to standard sheet. The layer of heater can have thickness to 60 mm that allows to create walls with the highest insulating parameters.

Gypsum cardboard with vinyl covering – one more modern decision in which producers try to increase universality of this finishing material. One party gypsum cardboard of leaf has the decorated vinyl covering. In set to HL there are universal profiles and connection elements suitable on coloring that allows to mount walls with already ready color schemes.

The sizes at gypsum cardboard of sheets long time were standard, but now it is possible to meet the most different offers: from 60 cm wide, from 2.5 meters long.

Advantages of gypsum cardboard

It is necessary to distinguish from numerous advantages of material:

  • Big bearing capacity;
  • Excellent strength characteristics;
  • Fire resistance;
  • Lack of toxic elements in structure, that is environmental friendliness;
  • Excellent warm and sound-proof characteristics;
  • Lack of unpleasant smell;
  • Possibility of maintenance of microclimate indoors due to sufficient air circulation through plaster basis of material;
  • Simplicity of mounting;
  • Possibility of implementation of difficult decorative decisions;
  • Low price.

Technologies of mounting

Despite all advantages of gypsum cardboard, not all want to deal with it. Need of mounting metal of profiles frightens by complexity and multistaging of works. But though this type of fixture is considered classical and correct, except it there are also other technology solutions.

So, some of four ways can mount gypsum cardboard:

  • By glue method directly on wall;
  • On plaster framework;
  • On rack basis;
  • By means of metal sections.

Glue mounting mode

It is ideal for finishing of the walls having almost plain surface. This fact will easily be checked by means of construction level.

Advantages of this method are indisputable:

  1. Durability of walls to any physical impacts increases;
  2. The free space is minimum spent;
  3. Speed of works increases.
  4. Simpler mounting in comparison with other methods.

It is possible to fix gypsum cardboard by means of glue, mastic or suitable construction mix with high rates of adhesion.

Among the recommended materials it is possible to note:

  • Perflix;
  • Ceresite CM 11;
  • Silicone.

HL mount in chessboard order therefore it is worth adhering to the following sequence of works:

  • Marking of walls with designation of edges and the middle of each leaf;
  • Primer of walls;
  • Preparation of sheets of gypsum cardboard – scrap it agrees to the marks made on wall;
  • Glue preparation;
  • Putting glue on wall;
  • Gluing of sheets.

It is worth specifying that after primer it is necessary to sustain necessary time for full drying of structure – usually from 12 to 24 hours. It is also important to remember that glue solutions should be spent as fast as possible therefore dissolve glue just before work and use it in full.

Mounting on plaster or timber frame construction

The plaster basis for fastening of sheets of material is convenient if there is only the minimum difference at the wall plane. The framework is made of pieces of HL which width is 60-80 mm. Plaster rails mount on walls by means of glued or screw joint, and on this the foundation is laid by sheets of the chosen material.

HL on wooden blank are similarly mounted.

Installation on profiles

This type of mounting gypsum cardboard of sheets gives to masters great opportunity for implementation of the most different ideas in registration of interior. Besides, the frame method allows to create false walls in any convenient location and to use at the same time additional insulation layers.

Fastening gypsum cardboard of sheets is carried out by means of metal sections from which enjoy the greatest popularity:

  • Rack profile. Has the With-shaped form and it is used usually at production of partitions and during the facing works;
  • The profile directing. Has the P-shaped form and it is necessary for creation of partitions and when finishing walls.
  • Ceiling profile. It is required for creation of framework of false ceiling.
  • The ceiling directing profile. Is suitable for installation works of ceiling frameworks and as vertical profile for walls.

Fastening gypsum cardboard of sheets means certain sequence of stages.

Stage first: marking of walls. At first the space from working wall to the GKL external level is noted. Usually this size is equal to 200 mm – the most convenient distance for alignment of surface, for distribution and conclusion of wires under sockets and switches and also for forming of insulation layers in case of such need. This space is noted on all perimeter: ceiling, wall, floor, the second wall. Further the marking of the wall when with step to 600 mm on it verticals are drawn becomes and tags under suspension with step of 500 mm in chessboard order on each vertical become. When finishing walls with windows or door openings it should be taken into account that joints of sheets have to be removed from edges of apertures at least on 30 cm.

Stage second: installation of profile. At first mount starting profile on perimeter of working wall, suspension in the marked places is established further. To them the directing profile will fasten further. All profiles and auxiliary elements mount by means of dowels and self-tapping screws. Professional builders recommend to use elastic rubber tape for sound insulation of structural noise – paste it on surface of the bearing profiles.

Stage third: insulation course. If there is need, then prior to direct fastening of HL the space between profiles is filled with blocks of the isolating material – polyfoam or mineral wool boards.

Stage fourth: preparation of sheets. Gypsum cardboard sheets are cut on blocks according to marking. If necessary on them do openings under sockets or switches by means of the electrofret saw or hacksaw.

Stage fifth: mounting of HL. Sheets fasten by means of self-tapping screws on metal to profile, at the same time the step has to be no more than 25 cm. It is considered correct when the self-tapping screw is drowned in leaf surface on 1-2 mm. During the work it is important to adhere to chess arrangement of sheets on wall and to watch discrepancy of seams.

Stage sixth: putty. These are necessary works when mounting gypsum cardboard. Putty allows to close joints and also provides dense contiguity of armoring lattice and protective corners which are established without fail on external corners and at will – on internal. At quality hard putty on wall traces reinforcing and fastening elements should not be noticeable by completion of works.

Stage seventh: finishing work.

Niches and regiments from gypsum cardboard

The convenience of HL is that already at stage of repair it is possible to create the regiments and niches which are perfectly supplementing interior and replacing bulky elements of furniture. In each case it is necessary to draw individually the desirable end result and at stage of marking to make necessary changes. During creation of framework accessory mounting of profiles and strengthening of rigidity of designs will be required.

Gypsum cardboard of the decision is always convenient repair as by means of sheets it is possible to make easily and quickly difficult and laborious works. Mounting of sheets differs in simplicity and availability that allows to use gypsum cardboard to masters with the most different skill level.
